Iran feels betrayed by the US when Israel and the US suddenly attacked Iran while negotiations facilitated by Oman were nearing completion.
Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Even though the war in the Middle East continues to rage, several international media outlets have reported that a number of countries, including Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Oman, are conducting mediation efforts with the United States (US) and Iran to end the war.
Indonesia, which was initially willing to act as a mediator, seems to have not yet gained the trust of the conflicting parties, Professor of International Law at the University of Indonesia (UI), Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, said in a statement received by Indonesia on Friday.
If Indonesia wants to play a role in the conflict between Israel and the US against Iran, then the role it can take is to make the initiative to build a coalition of guarantor countries to implement a ceasefire agreement preceded by the US and Israel not attacking Iran while peace is being sought by the mediator.
The role of the Guarantor Coalition is very important to end the war because there is a high level of distrust from Iran towards the US and Israel if efforts to establish a ceasefire, even if peace is achieved, Prof. Hikmahanto said, adding that Iran feels betrayed by the US when Israel and the US suddenly attacked Iran in the middle of negotiations facilitated by Oman were almost achieved.
"This created deep trauma and distrust in Iran towards the US," he said. To eliminate this distrust, a guarantor coalition consisting of several countries is needed to ensure there would be no violations of the ceasefire or peace agreement.
Indonesia, through President Prabowo's charisma and closeness to several heads of government, can take the initiative, he added. The president can contact a number of heads of government, especially countries that are heavily dependent on the Strait of Hormuz, such as France, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, Germany, and even the Gulf countries to form a Guarantor Coalition.
The head of state and the expected guarantor coalition can ask the US to stop the attacks, including asking the US to stop Israel from attacking Iran while the mediation carried out by the mediating countries is ongoing. The guarantor coalition even guarantees Iran that there would be no more attacks from the US and Israel if Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz.
