Indonesia’s Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has urged airlines to maintain coordination with airport operators, authorities, and relevant agencies to ensure safe and secure operations.

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – The suspension of operations at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and several other airports affected by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has ended; airport operations returned to normal starting Tuesday (Sept. 8) at 00:01 (local time).

Indonesia’s Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi personally announced the resumption of airport operations from Terminal 1 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport early Tuesday morning (Sept. 8).

As of September 8 at 00:01 (local time), Soekarno-Hatta Airport (in Banten Province), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (Capital Jakarta), and Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung City, West Java Province) have been declared active again.

Subsequently, Budiarto Curug Airport (Banten) and Pondok Cabe Airport (Banten) also reopened at 02:25 (local time), the minister stated.

Meanwhile, Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung Province) and Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas Airport (Lampung Province) are still awaiting further developments.

To ensure flight safety and security, the reopening of these airports comes with specific conditions.

First, airport authorities and airlines must inspect all aircraft fleets. Second, pilots and flight crews are required to be aware of "restricted polygons"—polygonal airspace areas where transit is restricted or prohibited by relevant authorities due to detected volcanic ash dispersion.

Previously, the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau had impacted airspace and airport operations since Saturday (Sept. 5).

Consequently, eight airports—including Soekarno-Hatta (Banten), Halim Perdanakusuma (Jakarta), Radin Inten II (Lampung), Husein Sastranegara (Bandung), Budiarto (Curug, Banten), Pondok Cabe (Banten), Taufik Kiemas (West Pesisir, Lampung), and Atung Bungsu (Pagar Alam, South Sumatra)—suspended operations.

Based on updated operational status, Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra Province—which had previously been closed—resumed normal operations as of Monday (September 7) at 09:00 (local time).
