Unity among Muslim countries is still weak, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said before members of the group of eight developing countries (Developing Eight/D-8) in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto firmly called for cooperation and unity among Muslim countries at a special session of the 11th Developing Eight (D-8) Summit at the New Administrative Capital Presidential Palace, Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday (Dec. 19).

The Head of State highlighted the weak solidarity and unity among Muslim countries on a number of issues, such as those on peace and humanity, the Indonesian Cabinet Secretariat said in a written report on Friday.

“We have to see the reality of this situation. We always express support for Palestine, Syria, but what kind of support?” President Prabowo said.

According to the President, in several meetings, several countries issued statements of support and provided humanitarian aid to other countries, but this was not accompanied with concrete steps to create changes.

“When our brothers and sisters are in trouble, we give statements of support and send humanitarian aid. Sorry, this is my opinion, but let's look at the reality. We must work together, and have the same voice, and not be divided," he stated.

On that occasion, President Prabowo also criticized the divide et impera strategy which still weakens solidarity among Muslim countries, and he cited internal conflicts in several Muslim countries.

"When will this end? How can we help Palestine if we are hostile to each other? Let's be honest with our people," he said.

The Head of State also considered that the international community does not respect the voices of Muslim countries, and even human rights issues often do not apply to Muslims.

“Human rights are not meant for Muslims. This is the reality. It is very sad. Let us do what we can, but still look at the reality and be honest with ourselves,” he continued.

President Prabowo again called for unity, close cooperation, and awareness of the global situation faced by Muslims.

He likewise emphasized Indonesia's commitment to doing its best to strengthen cooperation among Muslim countries.

“Indonesia will do its utmost, in any way we can, to encourage unity. I encourage cooperation,” he stated.
