Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia received the chairmanship in MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, Australia) from Turkiye at the meeting of the forum in New Delhi, India (March 2), making the country assume the chairmanship in MIKTA up to one year ahead. In her remarks during the handover of the chairmanship, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi conveyed three priorities for Indonesia’s chairmanship in MIKTA.The first is the strengthening of multilateralism which is currently under pressure, and because of that MIKTA must be at the forefront of maintaining multilateralism in order to promote security, stability and common prosperity."Indonesia believes that multilateralism is the best way to ensure that all countries stand on the same level and prevent the arbitrariness of those in power," Foreign Minister Retno said.Second is an inclusive recovery, she said, adding that developing countries continue to face dismal prospects due to various global challenges, meanwhile if this continues, the world would not be able to really recover, and therefore, MIKTA must coordinate actions to realize a strong and inclusive global recovery."The goal of sustainable development remains MIKTA's core agenda which is strengthened by inclusive dialogue with external partners," the foreign minister said. The third is digital transformation, and digitalization is the future of a prosperous MIKTA’s economy, because this creates great opportunities, but at the same time is accompanied by challenges, such as miss-information and disinformation, the minister said."Therefore, this year MIKTA must intensify its efforts to build norms, share best practices, and gather collective responses," the foreign minister added.Indonesia’s chairmanship in MIKTA also coincides with the country’s chairmanship in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Foreign Minister Retno said Indonesia hopes that MIKTA and ASEAN could become a 'bridge' and a 'positive force' in the global political arena. This time the MIKTA meeting, which was held on the sidelines of a series of G20 Ministerial Meetings in New Delhi, India, resulted in a Joint Communiqué.Reporting by Indonesia WindowBagikan
