Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – True peace is far more than the mere absence of conflict as it is the fundamental economic and social engine that drives human progress.
In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the stability forged through mutual respect and moral grounding is the only way where prosperity, education, and investment can truly take root.
This profound intersection of spirituality and societal advancement was the strategic focal point delivered by the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, during the inaugural ‘Harmony in Diversity Award’ Ceremony held in Hotel Indonesia, Jakarta.
"Without the moral grounding of faith, any peace we achieve is just a temporary (ceasefire), waiting to clash again at any time. You cannot build schools, you cannot take investments, and you cannot also develop a prosperous society if the ground beneath you is shaking with conflict," the minister stated unequivocally on Wednesday (July 15).
Addressing an international audience, the minister also highlighted a pragmatic reality: a nation's capacity to build a prosperous future is entirely dependent on its ability to maintain harmony.
Faith, peace, and progress are not isolated concepts, but rather an unbreakable chain that secures the ultimate well-being and dignity of the people.
This event was initiated by the Temasek Foundation alongside the 5P Global Movement that has been founded and chaired by Arsjad Rasjid.
This prestigious event gathered regional leaders to acknowledge individuals who build bridges instead of walls in an increasingly polarized world.
The ceremony was graced by prominent figures, including Halimah Yacob, former President of Singapore and distinguished Patron of the award, as well as ambassadors and ministers from across Southeast Asia.
The inaugural honor was awarded to His Eminence Cardinal Orlando Beltran Quevedo, recognizing his lifelong dedication to fostering peace and authentic dialogue through the Bishop-Ulama Conference in Mindanao, the Philippines.
“Your Eminence, your many years of work in Mindanao stand as a testament when courage meets compassion. You recognize that the truth of peace requires solving injustice, ensuring fairness and respecting the basic human rights of every community member,” the minister said.
As a sub-narrative to this vision of progress, the minister offered Indonesia’s national philosophy. Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’ as an example also a guiding light for managing differences.
It emphasizes that true harmony invites people to discover universal moral truths rather than erasing their unique traits.
Closing his remarks, the minister issued a compelling call to action for the entire ASEAN community, urging regional leaders to replicate local success stories of peacebuilding.
"Let us prove to the world that in Southeast Asia, our diversity will never be a source of deficiency. It will always remain our greatest strength, our highest pride, and our most enduring legacy," he said.
