Indonesia elected as regular member of ILO’s governing body

Indonesia was elected as a regular member of the Governing Body (GB) of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for 2021-2024 period at the 109th International Labor Conference (ILC) which was held on Monday (June 14, 2021).

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia was elected as a regular member of the Governing Body (GB) of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for 2021-2024 period at the 109th International Labor Conference (ILC) which was held on Monday (June 14).

In the election, Indonesia received 210 out of 230 votes, and will represent the Asia Pacific Region along with Saudi Arabia, Australia and Pakistan, according to a written statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The election of Indonesia as a regular member of the ILO’s GB is an international acknowledgment of Indonesia’s commitment to promoting social justice and improving employability, which are the main mandates of the ILO.

Indonesia always supports proper work under tripartite cooperation between the government, employers and trade unions.

In addition, Indonesia also serves as the coordinator of ASEAN countries at the ILO, providing an opportunity for the country to promote ILO programs that are in line with national and regional interests.

Beforehand, Indonesia held the position as a deputy member of the ILO’s GB during 2014-2017, and then continued in 2017-2020. This reflects the trust of ILO member countries on Indonesia to carry out the mandate in decision-making.

The ILO’s GB is the International Labor Office of the ILO Secretariat which consists of 56 countries and plays a strategic role in setting up policies, budgets, programs, and the election of the Director General of the ILO.

As a regular member of the ILO’s GB, Indonesia also has voting rights in various discussions on the ILO’s governance.
