Indonesia initiated a discussion on the protection of vital objects from cyber-attacks at a UN Security Council meeting entitled Cyber ​​Attacks Against Critical Infrastructure through video-teleconferencing facilities on Wednesday (Aug 26).

"The increasing dependence of countries and international organizations on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in providing public services, demands more protection for critical infrastructures, especially from cyber-attacks," Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York Dian Triansyah Djani said when chairing the meeting.

During the meeting, Indonesia highlighted a number of widespread impacts of cyber-attacks on vital objects as well as efforts to strengthen national legislation and international norms in protecting critical infrastructures.

Indonesia also emphasized the importance of bilateral, regional and global efforts in advancing capacity building and mutual understanding in facing cyber security challenges.

"It is expected that this meeting will be one of Indonesia's real contributions in advancing global efforts to promote an open, safe, stable and peaceful ICT environment," Ambassador Djani said.

The meeting was participated y all UN Security Council member countries, as well as the delivery of interventions from 23 other UN member countries.

A number of partner countries, namely Belgium, Estonia and Vietnam, as well as the International Red Cross (ICRC) also sponsored the meeting.

ICRC President Peter Maurer, Acting Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) Ramesh Rajasingham, and Director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), Renata Dwan were also the speakers at the meeting.
