Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo received the highest award from the Palestinian Government, the Grand Collar Order of the State of Palestine, which was presented by the Special Envoy of the President of Palestine, Riyad Al Maliki, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (August 8).

The highest award was presented as a form of recognition for Indonesia’s consistent support for the Palestinian cause for independence, the Indonesian Cabinet Secretariat said in a written statement as quoted by Indonesia Window here on Tuesday.

Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi explained that the award was delivered in person by President Mahmoud Abbas’ Special Envoy after a meeting with President Widodo. “The Special Envoy extended President Mahmoud Abbas’ very high appreciation to the President of the Republic of Indonesia for the country’s consistent stance in supporting the Palestinian cause,” Retno said.

In addition to presenting the award, the Special Envoy also extended President Abbas’ congratulations to President Widodo and all the Indonesian people on the commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.

Likewise, President Mahmoud Abbas expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s important role in supporting the Palestinian people, including Indonesia’s advocacy for a ceasefire, humanitarian assistance and a two-state solution.

“Mr. President (Widodo) strongly emphasized, among others, Indonesia’s consistent stance to continuously support the Palestinian cause. Indonesia will also continue to advocate for a ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian assistance, and of course a two-state solution,” Retno pointed out.

During the meeting, President Widodo also reaffirmed Indonesia’s unwavering commitment to continuously supporting the Palestinian struggle and to fighting for international recognition and full membership of Palestine in the United Nations (UN).

“Indonesia will also continue to approach UN member countries to recognize Palestine and support Palestine’s full membership in the UN,” Retno added.

When presenting the award, Special Envoy Riyad Al Maliki emphasized that this award was presented as a form of respect for President Widodo’s efforts in strengthening relations between Indonesia and Palestine and in supporting the Palestinian cause for freedom and independence.

The presentation of this award confirms the close diplomatic relations between the two countries, as well as Indonesia’s commitment to supporting Palestinian rights on the international stage.
