Japan expects Indonesia to support Carbon Neutral 2050

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Japan expects Indonesia to support the target of achieving Carbon Neutral by 2050, according to a written statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo received by Indonesia Window here on Monday.

Carbon Neutral is one of the climate change agendas discussed at a meeting of the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut B. Pandjaitan, and the Indonesian Minister of State-owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, with the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Kajiyama Hiroshi, in Tokyo on Friday (Dec 4).

“We are ready to support the achievement of Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Japanese technology. The Carbon Capture Storage project that is being built in Gundih, Central Java is a form of Japanese commitment,” Minister Kajiyama said.

Carbon Neutral is a term used to describe the state of an entity, such as a company, service, product or event, where the carbon emissions caused by them have been balanced out by funding an equivalent amount of carbon savings elsewhere in the world.

Meanwhile, during the meeting, Luhut emphasized the commitment of the Indonesian government to continue to provide legal certainty for Japanese investors.

“With the Indonesian Omnibus Law on the Job Creation, of course, Indonesia’s tax regulations will get better,” he said.

Another strategic issue discussed at the meeting was Japan’s commitment to complete the second phase of the Jakarta MRT (mass rapid transit) construction.
