A humanitarian mission of Indonesia's Medical Emergency Rescue-Committee (MER-C) to Afghanistan provided assistance in the forms of medicines, medical equipment, winter equipment, food and treatment for residents affected by the earthquake.

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia's Medical Emergency Rescue-Committee (MER-C) volunteer team which has completed a humanitarian mission to Afghanistan has returned home.

The MER-C's press release made available for Indonesia Window said here on Thursday that the team arrived here on Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2024).

It sent a volunteer team to Afghanistan on December 14, 2023 to carry out a humanitarian mission at the earthquake disaster site in Herat.

This team consists of five people including Dr. Tonggo Meaty Fransisca as the team leader, Dr. Rio Wikanjaya, SpOT, Ita Muswita (midwife) and two nurses namely Ade Adrian, SKep., Ners and Wirsal Adiansyah Harahap, Skep., Ners.

Tonggo Meaty Fransisca said she was relieved to have returned to his homeland and completed a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan and distributed aid from the Indonesian people.

The assistance provided was in the forms of medicines, medical equipment, winter equipment, food and treatment for residents affected by the earthquake.

“We are relieved because we can carry out the responsibilities given to us. Thank God, we can distribute donations from the Indonesian people to Afghanistan, especially in Herat. However, what is certain is that there is still a responsibility to provide results or reports to the presidium and then be able to provide recommendations about what else we can do for the Afghan people next," Meaty explained.

She also pointed out that this mission could be carried out because the Afghan government which is currently under the Taliban is quite open and willing to cooperate with all parties for the progress of Afghanistan.

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked Herat last October, killing around 4,000 people and leaving most residents displaced.

The MER-C sent its volunteer team to directly assist the condition of refugees in Herat who were affected by the earthquake. The team served in Afghanistan for almost a month.
