Jerusalem (Al-Quds), Occupied Palestinian Territories (Xinhua/Indonesia Window) — An Ethiopian Airlines cargo flight from Addis Ababa to Tel Aviv (in the occupied Palestinian territories) was forced to return to its airport of departure about an hour after takeoff on Monday (Oct. 12) because of Israeli security restrictions concerning crew members’ nationality, Israeli media reported.

According to the reports, the plane turned back after Israel’s aviation security system detected that one of the crew members was an Indonesian citizen. Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.

Israeli security requirements for foreign airlines have been significantly tightened since an attempted attack aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv on Sept. 30. The attempt was carried out by an Omani co-pilot; Oman also has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

Several media outlets said that under Israel’s new measures, airlines are reportedly required to ensure that crew members have undergone updated security background checks.

They must also ensure that crew members who are citizens—including dual citizens—of countries that have no diplomatic relations with Israel are not assigned to flights bound for Israel.
