Indonesian president leaves for Japan to attend G7 Summit

The G7 Summit will discuss various global issues such as climate change, food, energy and others, and Indonesia wants to give contributions to these fields.

 

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo along with First Lady Iriana Widodo and a limited delegation left for Hiroshima, Japan, Friday, to attend the G7 Summit with partner countries or the G7 Outreach Summit in 2023.

“This morning, I, along with the First Lady and a limited delegation, departed for Hiroshima in Japan in order to attend the invitation of the G7 President, namely Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida,” the president said in a press statement at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, on Friday shortly before taking off.

The G7 Summit will discuss various global issues such as climate change, food, energy and others, said President Widodo, adding that Indonesia wants to give contributions to these fields.

“Indonesia will bring voices from the global south. The point is that not only should big and developed countries be listened, but also developing countries have to be listened in that forum. That’s what we want,” he explained.

In this regard, President Widodo said that several points of results from the 42nd ASEAN Summit which took place in Indonesia’s Labuan Bajo tourist area, East Nusa Tenggara province, would also be raised by the president.

“With regard to Myanmar for example,” he added.

Apart from attending the G7 event, the president is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with a number of state leaders. Likewise, he will meet with several large Japanese businessmen in a business forum format.

President Joko Widodo and his entourage took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base using the Indonesia-1 presidential plane at around 9 a.m. local time. The president is slated to return to Indonesia on Sunday, May 21, 2023.
