Indonesia affirms commitment to tackle plastic wastes

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – The Indonesian government has affirmed its commitment to tackle plastic wastes issues by holding the Indonesia Country Dialogue: Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution.

The event which was held on Tuesday (Feb. 22) was a collaboration among the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), and the Ocean Plastics Leadership Network (OPLN), ahead of the Global Plastic Treaty which will be discussed at the upcoming United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) 5.2.

“This country dialogue aims to build the capacity of domestic stakeholders regarding the adoption of the global plastic agreement later at UNEA 5.2. This is an important momentum for all of us considering how serious this country is in dealing with plastic wastes issues,” Deputy for Environmental and Forestry Management at the Coordinating Ministry, Nani Hendiarti, said in a written statement here on Wednesday (Feb. 23).

She explained that the country dialogue discussed various points on the Global Plastic Treaty, covering its opportunities, benefits, consequences and responsibilities of all parties who will ratify it, as well as the next strategic steps that Indonesia needs to take.

The dialogue program had a breakout session consisting of four framework issues, namely finance, market developments and innovations, impacts monitoring and measurements, as well as social and gender inclusions.

“Indonesia’s strong commitment to tackling plastic waste is so ambitious, so that collaboration and global commitment are needed to move together to produce significant impacts,” Nani said.
