Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia passed the UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2489 on the role of the UN Mission in Afghanistan, the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, said after the vote in New York, United States on Tuesday (17/9) ).

The resolution on the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) extended the mandate of the mission for 12 months to 17 September 2020, according to a statement quoted from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry’s website.

“The resolution was initiated by Indonesia in cooperation with Germany, and includes various United Nations supports for the government and people of Afghanistan to create peace and encourage development,” Ambassador Djani said.

He explained that in reaching this agreement Indonesia had to bridge the difference of views in the UNSC and the threat of veto from the Permanent Members of the UNSC.

This consensus was reached due to the trust of the council member countries in Indonesia with its active and free foreign policy, including the active role of the Indonesian Foreign Minister in supporting peace in Afghanistan.

This form of support can be seen through the holding of the RI-Afghanistan Ulema Trilateral Conference in Bogor, West Java,  in May 2018 and Indonesia’s desire to encourage the active role of Afghan women.

All the UN Security Council member countries have highly appreciated the joint facilitation efforts of Indonesia and Germany which during the negotiation process always prioritized consensus.

Indonesia’s track record of always prioritizing the unity of the UN Security Council and saving civilians is the main advantage in reaching a resolution agreement.

This resolution provides a new mandate for UNAMA to support the capacity of the Government of Afghanistan in upholding human rights, gender equality, empowering women, and protecting children.

In addition, UNAMA also has a mandate to support the preparation for the Presidential Election in Afghanistan on September 28, 2019, in Afghanistan.
