Indonesia pushes for resolution of Myanmar humanitarian crisis at WEF

Sustainable peace and stability in Myanmar are expected to be realized, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said at the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Annual Meeting 2025 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland (Jan. 22).

 

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – An inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders is a priority to realize sustainable peace and stability in Myanmar, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has said.

Sugiono made the remark at the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Annual Meeting 2025 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland (Jan. 22).

The Foreign Minister expressed concern over the continuing internal conflict in Myanmar, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a written statement as quoted by Indonesia Window on Thursday.

The crisis that has been going on since 2021 has also given rise to various other security threats, including the increasing transnational crime and the ubiquitous opium production in Myanmar.

“Indonesia remains committed to supporting the creation of a conducive situation and a safe space for dialogue,” said Foreign Minister Sugiono, who also raised a joint commitment with ASEAN ministers to encourage the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC).

In the meeting, Sugiono invited partners to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar through the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center).

In addition, the minister emphasized that the Rohingya refugee issue is also the key to resolving the crisis in Myanmar.

The Diplomacy Dialogue on Myanmar meeting at the WEF Davos 2025 is a limited discussion that discusses international efforts to find diplomatic solutions and joint solutions to the crisis in Myanmar.

The discussion was also attended by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Myanmar issue, the President of the International Red Cross, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration, and the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Also present were a number of leaders of international civil society organizations.

The Myanmar humanitarian crisis was one of the main issues raised at the 2025 World Economic Forum meeting. The participants in the diplomatic dialogue appreciated Indonesia’s important role in the Myanmar issue in the hope this role would continue.

In addition to being a speaker at the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono was also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with a number of partner countries on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos.
