Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – The Indonesian government and the central bank (Bank Indonesia/BI) launched seven denominations of the 2022 emission of rupiah banknote on Aug. 18, 2022, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said here Thursday.

The seven denominations are officially valid, issued, and circulated across the archipelago to coincide with the 77th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence, Aug. 17, 2022.

“The minister of finance and I have officially launched the new issuance money in 2022 as legal tender in all regions of the Republic of Indonesia,” Perry said.

The bank notes issued in 2022 consist of denominations of 100,000 rupiahs, 50,000 rupiahs, 20,000 rupiahs, 10,000 rupiahs, 5,000 rupiahs, 2,000 rupiahs, and 1,000 rupiahs.

The 2022 bank notes still maintain the main image of national heroes on the front, as well as Indonesian cultural themes (images of dances, natural landscapes, and flora) on the back as those issued in 2016.

“The legal tender is valid throughout the territory of the Republic of Indonesia, which at the same time strengthens the symbol of unity and (the symbol) of the Republic of Indonesia,” Perry explained.

There are three aspects of innovation to strengthen the 2022 currency, namely a sharper color design, a more reliable security element, and a better resistance to currency materials.

Head of the BI Communications Department Erwin Haryono in his statement said that the innovation was intended to make rupiah currency easier to identify, comfortable, and safe to use.

“And it is more difficult to counterfeit so that rupiah currency is more qualified and reliable and becomes a common pride as a symbol of the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” Erwin pointed out.

The issuance and circulation of the 2022 bank notes is one of the implementations of the mandate of the Currency Law as part of the plan to meet the public’s money needs in 2022, and remain implementing good governance according to the law.

The issuance of the 2022 bank notes does not have the impact of revocation and/or withdrawal of the rupiah that has been previously issued.

“All the rupiah bank notes or coins that have been issued previously are declared to remain valid as legal tender throughout the territory of the Republic of Indonesia as long as they have not been revoked and withdrawn from circulation by Bank Indonesia,” Erwin said.
