36 varieties of Indonesian coffee receive international certification

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – A total of 36 Indonesian coffee varieties produced by 22 farmers from various coffee production centers in Indonesia received a certificate of recognition from Coffee Cupping International on Monday (Dec. 13).

The awarding titled ‘Coffee Cupping International Certificate Awarding 2021’ which was held virtually was a continuation of the Indonesia Coffee Cupping event on September 2 in The Hague, the Netherlands.

This award is a strategic step to penetrate and increase Indonesian coffee exports in the international market, especially the Netherlands.

The Indonesian coffee commodity with a unique and varied taste is expected to compete in the European market, and the world.

At the event, Indonesian Ambassador to the Netherlands Mayerfas emphasized the importance of cooperation among all parties to continue to boost national coffee exports.

“This cannot be done through the promotion of coffee products alone, but should also be supported by improving the quality of Indonesian coffee,” he said.

Indonesia is currently the world’s fourth largest coffee producer.

The increase in coffee production was recorded by 14 percent from 660,000 tons in 2019, to 754,000 tons in 2020.

Of the approximately 1.2 million hectares of coffee plantations in the archipelagic country, most of which are owned by small-scaled farmers.

Most of the coffee production is marketed to international markets, including the Netherlands as a potential export destination.

The value of Indonesian coffee exports to the western European country in 2020 reached 5.6 million U.S. dollars, with an increasing trend of 23.4 percent in the last five years.

This value is certainly very small considering that the Netherlands is one of largest coffee-consuming country in the world, with an average consumption of 8.3 kilograms of coffee per capita or about four cups per day.
