Indonesia wins “World Culture Award” medal in Seoul

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – An Indonesian team won a silver medal of the World Culture Award at the 2019 Itaewon Global Village Festival which was held in Seoul, South Korea, on October 12-13 and participated in by 43 countries.

A statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul received by Indonesia Window here on Tuesday mentioned that the Indonesian team obtained high scores in some categories, namely cultural performances, national promotional booth, parades, and ambassador participation.

Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Umar Hadi said the performance of the Indonesian team was greatly appreciated by the judges and festival visitors.

“We have proven that not only has the culture succeeded in becoming a bridge to unite the nation, but also been able to lift the image of Indonesia in the world,” the ambassador remarked.

The Itaewon Global Village Festival is held every early fall since 2008.

This year’s festival under a theme Roads to Itaewon aims to establish South Korea as a country where various traditions and cultures from around the world meet and develop.

Itaewon’s Head of Tourism Sector Cho Min-seong stressed that the concept of this year’s festival was to make Itaewon a link among the global cultures and generations.

“Under this bright autumn sky, we witness Itaewon becoming a gathering place for cultures around the world. We also watch in Itaewon that Seoul and the world become one through cultures,”  Cho said.

Itaewon which is a settlement (dong) in the Youngsan-gu district, Seoul, South Korea is the most multi-cultural area in the country. Around 22 thousand people live in this region with many such restaurants opened by foreign immigrants as from India, Thailand, the Middle East, Mexico and Indonesia.

The Itaewon Global Village is one of the biggest festivals out of around 1,300 festivals held in South Korea every year. This year, the festival attracted around 1.5 million visitors.
