This value is around 134.1 percent of the plan set out last year of 1.43 trillion rupiahs (about 99.7 million dollars), Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Dadan Kusdiana, said at a press conference here on Monday (Jan. 17).

Data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources show that the total installed capacity of geothermal power plants in the archipelagic country reaches 2.27 gigawatts.

The government targets the realization of geothermal investment this year to reach 0.95 billion dollars.

Under the National Energy Plan, the government promotes the use of geothermal energy to generate electricity with a capacity of 7.24 gigawatts by 2025, and increase to 9.3 gigawatts by 2035.

Indonesia’s Pacific Ring of Fire areas stretching from the westernmost province of Aceh to the easternmost province of Papua have 127 active volcanoes which are the sources of geothermal energy.

Currently, Indonesia ranks second worldwide as a country with largest geothermal resources and installed capacity of geothermal power plants, after the United States.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Geological Agency will carry out exploration drillings in 20 geothermal working areas to reach 683 megawatts by 2024.
