Indonesia, Vietnam agree on defense and security cooperation

Vietnam and Indonesia reached an agreement on cooperation in the field of defense and security in a bilateral meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Tô Lâm at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday, March 10, 2025.
Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia and Vietnam agreed to increase cooperation in the field of defense and security, including in the development of the defense industry, joint military exercises, and joint patrols.
Indonesia and Vietnam reached the agreement in a bilateral meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Tô Lâm at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday, March 10, 2025.
“In the field of defense and security, we agreed to increase cooperation, first in the defense industry, also in joint exercises, cooperation between our two defenses,” President Prabowo explained.
The wo countries also agreed on exchanging officers, increasing training and joint patrols, the president was quoted as saying by the Indonesian Cabinet Secretary’s website, Tuesday.
Defense cooperation is an important part of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and Vietnam, which also emphasized their support for the stability and peace of the ASEAN region as the main foundation for economic growth and public welfare.
“We both agree that peace and stability are the keys to regional prosperity. We agree to continue to increase cooperation with our other ASEAN partners,” he said.
In addition to defense cooperation, Indonesia and Vietnam also agreed to strengthen collaboration in other fields including those on the fisheries industry and the two countries’ central banks.
As part of strengthening bilateral relations, President Prabowo conveyed his plan to make a reciprocal visit to Vietnam.
“I have stated that I will make a reciprocal visit in the near future to Vietnam. And there I hope we can sign an implementing agreement on our cooperation in our economic zone,” he pointed out.
Cooperation on the economic zone is an important achievement, considering that this issue has been delayed for dozens of years, the head of state said in the hope the ratification process at the legislative level in both countries can be completed soon.
“We hope that ratification by our parliament in April after Eid al-Fitr and their legislative will also ratify in the near future. God willing, I will sign in Hanoi during my state visit in return for the visit of His Excellency Tô Lâm,” the president explained.
Meanwhile, Tô Lâm also stated the commitment of both countries to strengthen cooperation in a number of fields that have developed substantively and effectively.
The two countries are also committed to supporting each other both in national and international forums, the UN and non-aligned, and the ASEAN region.
The commitment also includes increasing coordination between ASEAN countries to realize a stronger ASEAN in carrying out its role, enhancing solidarity and ASEAN principles for regional security,” Tô Lâm said.
On that occasion, he expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome from the Indonesian government and people to him and his delegation.
He said he was happy to share this feeling, wishing President Prabowo good health and success.
