BRICS began with the establishment of BRIC, which is an abbreviation of its four founding countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, and China. BRIC first referred to an economic group, then evolved into an intergovernmental organization formed by the four countries.

In 2010, BRIC included South Africa, which was then known as BRICS.

Four other countries joined the group in 2024, namely Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Argentina and Saudi Arabia were invited to join, but the former  declined the invitation, and the latter has not formally convened.

The group, sometimes referred to as ‘BRICS+’, now represents about 45 percent of the world’s population and 35 percent of global GDP (based on purchasing power parity).
