Senior diplomat says dozens of Indonesians evacuated from Iran to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan became a country where at least 95 Indonesian people were successfully evacuated from Iran which is now in a war against zionist Israel.
Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – At least 95 Indonesians were successfully evacuated from Iran to its bordering country of Azerbaijan on Saturday (June 20, 2025) at around 4:00 am local time.
Previously, the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Budi Gunawan, announced that approximately 103 Indonesian citizens were ready to be evacuated from Tehran, the capital of Iran where 380 Indonesians are estimated to stay in.
Reliable sources said that the evacuation was directly led by Chargé d’Affaires ad Interim Elbanita Ruru, as the newly appointed Indonesian Ambassador to Iran and Turkmenistan.
Being sworn in by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on March 24, 2025, he has not yet officially assumed the post in Tehran.
The group departed from Tehran on Friday at around 7:30 am local time using four buses.
After a long overland journey of approximately 17 hours, the 103 Indonesian citizens arrived at around 11:40 pm local time on the Iran-Azerbaijan border from which they continued their trip to the capital city of Azerbaizan, Baku, which took about five hours.
They safely arrived in Baku in the early morning at 4 am local time.
Previously, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono had elevated the status of the country’s Embassy in Tehran, Iran, to alert level 1 due to the increasing intensity of attacks in the conflict between Iran and zionist Israel.
“Based on developments over the past two days, where the intensity of Israeli attacks has increased, targeting not only military but also civilian sites, I have decided to raise the alert level at the Tehran Embassy from Level 2 to Level 1,” Sugiono said while accompanying President Prabowo’s visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday (June17, 2025).
Sugiono stated that there are currently around 380 Indonesian citizens in Iran, particularly in capital Tehran.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also instructed the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the possibility of evacuating Indonesian citizens as part of contingency measures in response to the increasingly unfavorable situation.
Following the foreign minister’s directive, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, currently led by Elbanita Ruru, announced the Level 1 Alert from the Indonesian government via the embassy’s official Instagram account, @indonesiaintehran on (Thursday, June 18, 2025)
“The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran will soon carry out evacuation measures for Indonesian citizens who are willing. Further details will be shared in the WhatsApp groups for Indonesian nationals in Iran and by region,” wrote **@indonesiaintehran**.
Elbanita Ruru immediately took various steps to compile data and gather Indonesian citizens willing to be evacuated to a neighboring country, given the escalating war between Iran and Israel, which increasingly endangers Indonesians residing in Iran.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran made various efforts to quickly collect data on Indonesian citizens based on their regions, universities, or other available data.
One of the evacuated Indonesian citizens expressed joy over the attention and preparedness of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran in protecting its citizens.
