Magnitude 6.1 quake in Indonesia’s Garut leaves one slightly injured

Magnitude 6.1 quake in Indonesia’s Garut district was located at 7.51 South Latitude and 107.52 East Longitude at a depth of 109 kilometers with an epicenter on land.

 

Bogor, West Java, (Indonesia Window) – A magnitude 6.4 quake which was later updated to a magnitude 6.1 quake occurred in Garut district, West Java province, on Saturday at 4.49 p.m. local time.

Based on data from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the magnitude 6.1 quake in the district was at 7.51 South Latitude and 107.52 East Longitude at a depth of 109 kilometers.

According to the BMKG, the epicenter of the earthquake was on land and had no potential for any tsunami.

The head of Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), Suharyanto, said in an official statement that the earthquake was felt quite strongly for 4-5 seconds in the districts of Garut, Tasikmalaya and Bandung, West Java province.

Suharyanto, who is currently still in Cianjur district where the recent magnitude 5.6 quake occurred, also felt the tremor.

“It was felt quite strong for 4-5 seconds in the districts of Garut, Tasikmalaya and Bandung,” he explained.

Meanwhile, data collected by the BNPB’s Control and Operations Center showed that four houses were damaged and one school building was also hit by the earthquake.

In addition, one person of Putrajawa village in Selaawi sub district was injured and has been taken to a nearest health center.

“For the time being, it was informed that four houses in Garut district were damaged, and one school building was also destroyed. There is one victim who was injured and has been taken to the local health center,” Suharyanto noted.

In response to the Garut earthquake, the Head of BNPB will immediately send a team to assist with relief assistance and rapid assessments as well as other necessary needs.

The development of information on emergency situation in Garut will be submitted periodically.

“I, along with all members of the team and the local Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BPBD), will immediately collect information, and inform any developments to the public,” Suharyanto said.
